Obviously, all of these trips are going to be based out of Golden Anchor Cabins. We’re located perfectly in the heart of the Potomac Highlands and near all of the iconic destinations in WV. Possible Pit Stops Along the Way
Although this motorcycle ride technically dips into Maryland, it is still largely within West Virginia. The trip to Oakland, MD takes you by some of the prettiest Amish farms in Maryland. In addition to this, you will pass a few natural wonders. Here is the complete set of directions mapped out on Google that hits every stop I mention.

West Virginia’s most photographed location | Blackwater Falls
When you leave Golden Anchor Cabins you’ll head North on Rt 32. Just a few short miles up the road is Blackwater Falls State Park, near the town of Davis. I’ve got some awesome insider tips about Blackwater Falls State Park in another blog post so I won’t go in depth here but I at least wanted to mention you’ll be driving right by one of West Virginia’s top destinations on this route.

The Straightest Road in Tucker County
After traveling through Thomas, remember to follow WV-90 to encounter a unique stretch of road. Although you’re completely surrounded by woods and the hills are numerous, WV-90 is one of the straightest roads you will find in all of West Virginia before it opens up into farm lands at the Maryland line. WV-90 will take you to Gormania and briefly onto Rt 50 before continuing north into Maryland’s panhandle and our next destination, Oakland, MD.
Swallow Falls State Park
Oakland has a lot to offer visitors. Look up Swallow Falls State Park (I think it costs $5 for out-of-staters to get in). Although it is a few miles outside of Oakland, it is definitely worth a visit. There is a mile and a half hiking loop that takes you to Swallow Falls and Muddy Creek Falls. Both falls are very pretty and accessible. In the summer this is the preferred swimming hole for locals so don’t forget to bring your bathing suits!
Oakland, MD – Local Eats and Shopping

Our favorite restaurant in Oakland is Tomanetti’s. The owners typically run it themselves so the restaurant is always clean and the food is always fresh and delicious. My wife loves their seafood medley pasta and I typically get their Philly cheese steak pizza.
The Cornish Cafe is also awesome. They do the panini / wrap / homemade soups / coffee house thing. Because of the proximity to our cabins, we shop Englander’s Antiques and Schrock’s Country Store for cabin decor and furniture. Just out of town on Rt 219, Saffitickers is an Amish run ice cream stand with soft serve that is out of this world!

Visit the Smallest Church in West Virginia | Motorcycle Ride Ideas

Crossing back into West Virginia there is a cute chapel near Silver Lake called Our Lady of the Pines. They boast themselves as the smallest church in the USA. It is open to the public and definitely worth a stop and a selfie.

In order to travel back to the cabins, you will travel through the main thoroughfare of Thomas. Not only are there unique galleries and shops in Thomas there are inviting local restaurants. TipTop has great coffee and Purple Fiddle has not only great beer but live music as well.
If you’re looking for a cabin as part of your next motorcycle adventure, we would love to have you! Check our online calendar here for availability.

Travel through Elkins and Parsons on this Scenic Loop | Motorcycle Rides in West Virginia

Here is the complete set of directions mapped out on Google including the bypasses I call attention to.
71 miles – 2 hour ride
Possible Pit Stops Along the Way
I’m going to start with a quick trip. The shortest loop I can think of that will still satisfy all of my road trip desires is from Golden Anchor Cabins to the small towns of Elkins and Parsons. From our main property head south on Rt 32 and then turn right onto Rt 33 in Harman heading for Elkins.
Outstanding Food and Beautiful Views on Rt 33
The first stop on my list is Alpine Lodge and Restaurant. Located right off of Rt 33 and locally owned and operated, they are a great option for breakfast, lunch or dinner. My wife and I have always found the restaurant to be impeccably clean and the food to be outstanding, especially their seafood specials.

Also on Rt 33 just down the road from Alpine is another restaurant, The Forks Inn at Kelly Mountain. They serve possibly the best dinner in the state. I mention them here because while they will probably not be open while you’re traveling through, they have an unparalleled view of the Otter Creek Wilderness Area and Bickle Knob from their parking lot.
From Kelly Mountain, it is a short drive down Rt 33 to the town of Elkins.
Things to do in Elkins | WV motorcycle ride pit stops

Downtown Elkins has much to offer in the way of entertainment. Here are some of the best things to do in Elkins:
Rt 219 – take this old byway option | motorcycle ride through WV byways
When you leave Elkins and head towards Parsons I recommend taking old Rt 219 rather than Rt 48. While there is nothing wrong with 48, since the completion of Rt 48’s 4 lane highway, Rt 219 became a very quiet road that essentially parallels the highway. It is perfect for an afternoon of sightseeing and it takes you by the next place worth stopping at.

Elkins Raceway | Thunder in the Mountains
Rt 219 has an exciting secret tucked away that is known only to the locals. If you’re in the area on a Saturday night through the warm months, you have to check out Elkins Raceway. This 3/8 mile dirt track is packed with local fans on the weekend. Starting at 6:00, they race Dirt Super Late Models, Modifieds, Street Stocks and Mini-Wedges with the feature race sometimes ending near midnight. Things get loud, dirty and fun here!

Next Stop – The Town of Parsons
Rt 219 will take you through the open rolling hills of Randolph County into the steeper mountains and winding roads of Tucker County and the town of Parsons. In Parsons there are a few places definitely worth a stop. Fat Olives has not only great pizza, wings and beer but also outside seating options by the river. This is my favorite restaurant in Tucker County and I try to talk my wife into stopping by every time we are in Parsons.
A walk around the park
Another one of our favorite things to do when we are in Parsons is just take a simple walk by the river together. As soon as you cross the bridge on 219N turn right on Nursery Bottom Road and park in the Allegheny Highlands Trail parking lot then walk the Forest Service Rd that divides the meadow from the trees. This area is maintained for public use so feel free to use the grass paths as well and explore the tree nursery. This is a great place to stretch your legs after a ride!
Route 72 and the River Road
From Parsons, you can drive to Thomas and down Rt 32 to bring you back to Golden Anchor but you also have the option of picking up Rt 72 South. This road very pretty and paved but be warned, it it very tiny and has lots of switchbacks. You can also use the River Road to avoid some of the twistiest parts of Rt 72 (my personal preference).
This is the shortest ride of my biker-friendly ideas but it will still give you a taste of the area. But there at several other rides to consider as well. Check out our full list of motorcycle rides in West Virginia here!

KEYWORD: motorcycle rides in West Virginia
I have some WILD Motorcycle Ride Ideas in West Virginia this time!
West Virginia has a reputation for meandering two-lane roads that are perfect for motorcycles ride ideas and sight-seeing trips. As the word gets out in the bike community, we find that more and more motorcycle enthusiasts are coming to stay in our cabins. That suits us just fine!
In this segment of my favorite motorcycle routes near Golden Anchor Cabins I’ve got a wild ride in mind… Namely, a 143 mile loop travels north from Golden Anchor Cabins into the town of Kingwood, home of Hovatter’s Wildlife Zoo and then back down into St. George, where Blackwater Outdoor Adventures can take you down the wild Cheat Narrows on a white water rafting excursion!

Who We Are
Before I dive in with the route I want to mention a little about us. Golden Anchor Cabins is a couples-only romantic cabin getaway destination located right in the heart of the scenic Potomac Highlands and minutes away from Blackwater Falls.
Our central location gives bikers several options for scenic driving loops. And our luxury cabins are complete with paved driveways and a hot tub in every cabin which gives guests biker-friendly access all the way to the cabin and an awesome place to relax after a long day of riding. As with all my other motorcycle loop routes (part 1 and part 2 can be read here), this one has smooth roads, beautiful mountain overlooks, and cool things to see and do.

My Suggested Stops ~ West Virginia Motorcycle Ride Ideas
Kingwood – click here for route – 143 miles – approximately 3 1/2hr drive
The route I have mapped out today takes you to a few iconic spots in the state and follows the beautiful Cheat river for several miles. Starting at our cabins, follow Rt 32 North to Rt 219 North and on to my first suggested stop, the Fairfax Stone Historical Monument State Park.

1 Fairfax Stone – A Bit of History and A Unique Opportunity
The Fairfax Stone marks the spring that is the humble beginning of the massive Potomac River which empties into the Chesapeake Bay outside Washington DC.
This stone was placed in 1746 to establish boundaries between the English colonies of Maryland and Virginia. It’s neat because of its history and significance but it isn’t all that much to look at. Still worth a selfie though. That way, if you’re ever in DC at Potomac Park looking across the river to the Lincoln Memorial you can smile knowing that you once straddled this same river in West Virginia.
2 West Virginia’s Wildlife Zoo
Getting back on the road, you can follow the route through the tiny Preston County towns of Aurora, Terra Alta and then through Kingwood before coming to the main attraction of the loop, a family-owned West Virginia zoo. Hovatter’s Wildlife Zoo is quite the surprise given its location.
This zoo offers a much more intimate experience with a large variety of animals than you will find with larger zoo facilities. I believe they serve as a sort of nursery to large zoos since there are always a few babies around. It might be your only opportunity to get your picture taken with a six week old giraffe!
Their facilities are clean and their animals are healthy and cared for. I highly recommend swinging by this true hidden gem! They are only open seasonally however so double check their hours before setting off.

3 Get Your Kicks On Route 50 at Cool Springs Park
If you’ve scanned through my suggested stop list, you probably noticed I have an Exxon on there. I know, I can hear you saying it. “Why on Earth did Daniel include a gas station on this list?” Just go along with me for a minute… This isn’t just a simple gas station. It is actually a very cool pit stop spot.
At Cool Springs Park Exxon, you can have their full service attendant top off your tank for you while you pop in for a quick bite at their country deli and ice cream shop, browse their expansive gift shop or stroll through their park which has several acres of antique tractors, farm equipment and trains throughout. The Cool Springs Park is reminiscent of an old road-side attraction once seen on Route 66 only with a West Virginia spin on it. You simply have to stop here.

My Little Sci-Fi Detour at the International Earth Station
Just down the road from the Exxon you will turn right onto Rt 72 and head south for 4.2 miles. Before making it to my next official stop I do want to mention something that always catches my eye here. Let’s call this a quick detour idea. Popping up out of nowhere on this road are these gigantic aging satellite dishes.
The long-closed AT&T International Earth Station (pinned as the Etam Earth Station on Google Maps) is a gated facility topped with 4 huge antennas that once received transmissions from orbiting communication satellites. The location is just outside of the National Radio Quiet Zone surrounding The National Radio Astronomy Observatory.
I mention this facility because I find it fascinating to look at the juxtaposition of the monstrous antennas and all unwitting cows grazing under them at the neighboring farm. But enough detouring, there is another wild opportunity just down the road!

4 Kayaking and River Rafting Opportunity at Blackwater Outdoor Adventures
A few miles farther south on Rt 72 is the area’s local outfitter, Blackwater Outdoor Adventures. They run canoes, kayaks, tubes down the lazy parts of the Cheat River as well as guided white water rafting through the Cheat Narrows. I did a full write up on their rafting excursion here so if you’re interested in checking them out, I suggest giving it a read.

Jamie, Nate and I absolutely love floating the flat waters of the Cheat between Parsons and St George. They will drop you off and let you float back to their location right on the river. It makes for an awesome afternoon!

5 A Beautiful Mountain Overlook that is Biker Friendly
Fred Long Centennial Park is my next stop on the loop. Looking from backbone mountain across the valley to St. George is one of the best views in Tucker County. Unlike many of the area’s beautiful overlooks, this one is super easy to get to with a motorcycle. Fred Long Centennial Park is one of my favorite motorcycle ride ideas in West Virginia. While you’re stopped at the park you could illegally walk down a side road and get right under one of those massive windmills nearby, though I would never recommend trespassing. The company that operates them is miles away and they don’t want anyone there messing around on their property.

6 Farm Up Table in Thomas, WV
At this point, you’re not far from the Town of Thomas. I recently highlighted a new restaurant that is opening in Thomas called Farm Up Table. Their food is phenomenal so if you’re hungry, this is my number one choice for eats on this loop. The town of Thomas is worth a walk around as well. There are many shops and galleries worth visiting too.

7 Canaan Valley State Park
The final stop I want to mention on this route is actually just up the road from our cabins. Canaan Valley State Park is the best neighbor we could ask for. Their friendly staff keeps the park and all its activities welcoming and exciting.
Canaan Valley State Park has miles of hiking trails, multiple restaurants, an indoor and outdoor pool (both open to the public), a skeet shooting and archery range and an 18 hole golf course where they welcome everyone for a round of golf plus several other amenities. Anyone that stays in our cabins needs to take an afternoon to explore Canaan Valley State Park.
That’s all I have for this motorcycle loop. The next one I have planned will take us to the very top of the State, and I don’t mean in the northern panhandle. If you have any questions about vacationing with us, feel free to email me at goldenanchorcabins@gmail.com or call me at 304-704-8764.
I also send out a monthly newsletter where I keep all our guests up to date with what is going on at our cabins and the area. If you’d like to hear from us you can sign up for the newsletter here. Finally, you can always see all our current cabin availability and book your stay online at https://guest.rezstream.com/search/golden-anchor-cabins.
Thanks so much for reading, my family and I hope to host your next cabin getaway soon!

Big Rocks and Back Roads near Golden Anchor Cabins

This is Daniel from Golden Anchor Cabins back again writing about some of the best motorcycle rides and road trips you can take in West Virginia. Earlier I got us started with a few shorter loops based out of our cabins. If you want to read about looping around Elkins, Parsons and Oakland, check it out here. For this post I want to branch out a bit and explore a little deeper into the Potomac Highlands.
Don’t Listen to the Locals
Firstly, I want to give bikers that have never traveled in this area a word of advice. Don’t go to Dolly Sods with your bike. The locals are going to tell you how beautiful it is up there. Unquestionably it is beautiful. But it is also miles and miles of bumpy, dusty gravel roads. There will be a toll on you and your ride if you try to get there. There are better options that will get you that same panoramic mountain vista thrill. I’m going to focus specifically on getting you to the best overlooks around in part II of my biker friendly loop blog series called Our Favorite Motorcycle Rides in West Virginia.
Seneca Rocks and Petersburg – Our Favorite Motorcycle Road Trips in West Virginia

Follow this route on Google Maps
Since Dolly Sods is out of the question for a trip on a bike, this route is as close as you can get for those epic mountain views.
First we will head south on Rt 32 to Harman and onto Rt 33 East. Note – Camden’s Corner Mart in Dryfork is the only gas station for at least the first sixty miles of the trip. Gas up if you’re running on E.

Just A few miles outside of Harman there is a turnout at the top of Allegheny Mountain by a big red barn. From here you can get a beautiful view of Pocahontas County before dipping back down the mountain to some of the windier bits of 33 as you head toward Seneca Rocks. You’ll know it when you get there. You’ll see the giant rock crag before you get to the intersection of Rts 33 and 28.
Seneca Rocks

There is a great discovery center at the base of Seneca Rocks where you can learn about the formations and the history of the area. They also have a very cool diorama of the mountain region of WV. Find Canaan Valley on there – it looks like a giant footprint! There are a few small walking trails around the property and a 1.5 mile hike to the observation tower at the top of the rocks. This is a relentlessly rising trail with a significant elevation change but the view from the top is amazing!
Smoke Hole Caverns

From Seneca Rocks, take Rt 28 North 17 miles to our next stop, Smoke Hole Caverns. Smoke Hole Caverns is a pristine cave system that offers guided tours every hour. It is a very mild and safe tour, you won’t even be asked to wear a helmet. Nonetheless, Some of the formations are out-of-this-world! Their claims to fame include the largest ribbon stalactite in the world and one of the tallest ceilings of any cavern in the eastern United States. There is also a huge gift shop there as well if you’d like to get a keepsake from the trip.
Cheetah B’s

A few short miles up the road is a roadside family restaurant that shouldn’t be overlooked. Cheetah B’s is one of the top reviewed restaurants in West Virginia. Not only that but I’ve had several good experiences there myself and highly recommend them. You can read more about Cheetah B’s in our 11 Best Restaurants of Potomac Highlands post.
They also post lots of food photos their Facebook page if you want a peek at their upcoming specials!
Rt 42 bypass and Rt 48 overlook at Bizmarck

There are several roads that will to get you our next stop from Petersburg but I prefer picking up Rt 42 and traveling through Maysville and up the winding hill of the Union Highway. It’s most important to follow the map closely here to turn onto Rt 48. Here we will detour away from Davis briefly. The overlook just down the road from Bizmark on Rt 48 is in short, breath taking! Make a U-turn at the next intersection on 48 and head back toward Davis.
The Mt Storm Lake is nothing super special but is worth driving by if only for a peek and an excuse to take a few miles of the old road before getting back on Rt 48 and heading into Davis. I’ll cover Davis later but I would mention that there are several restaurants, bars and recreation opportunities there. At Davis you can finally pick Rt 32 back up and head South back to your cabin which completes one of our motorcycle road trips in West Virginia.
Smoke Hole Road and Franklin – Our Favorite Motorcycle Road Trips in West Virginia

Follow this route on Google Maps
While this is certainly not the longest loop I have planned for this series, this route might be the most adventurous! This trip starts like the previous route where you take Rt 32 to Rt 33 to Rt 28 to Smoke Hole Caverns. But here is where we will diverge from the previous trip.
View from Smoke Hole Road

Shortly after passing the caverns, turn right onto Smoke Hole Road and start climbing the hill. Not more than a half of a mile after turning onto this road you will wind your way to the top of the hill. When the fields open up at the top, find a wide place to stop because there are some stunning views to take in! At this point the route is paved but also remote and twisty.
North Fork Mountain Trail and Chimney Rock

If you’re up for a vigorous walk at this point on your trip, you’re a few miles from a parking area that is also a trailhead point for the North Fork Mountain Trail. 2 1/2 miles away and also 1500 feet above you is Chimney Rock. This rock outcrop is a hidden gem that offers one of the best views in the state. Theoutbound.com has a great write-up explaining the 5 mile round trip hike to Chimney Rock.
Franklin and Warner’s Drive In

Smokehole Road (28/11) will twist its way through the Monongahela Forest for 18 miles. Eventually it will connect to Rt 220 near Upper Tract which you can take south to the town of Franklin. The Star Motel is a nice dining option for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Rt 220 will also take you by the Warner’s Drive-In. They are one of the last drive-in theaters in West Virginia, open on the weekends in the summer. Though this guarantees an hour long drive home in the dark, we find ourselves watching at least one summer blockbuster movie there just for this fun, nostalgic and unique experience.
Germany Valley Overlook

Leaving the town of Franklin, you will want to pick up Rt 33 west. Travel along 33 west until you crest North Mountain. On the way back down, watch for the parking turnout on the right hand side of the road because it pops up quick. The tree canopy opens briefly but it gives you a gorgeous view of Germany Valley. You’ll want to stop here because this is one of the most popular photo spots in the state!
Escape Underground at Seneca Caverns

From here it is but a short drive to Seneca Caverns. I prefer the tour here over Smoke Hole if only because you actually have to bend over a few times to avoid rock formations and you actually come out at a different point than you came in at. Unlike Smoke Hole, Seneca Caverns does close seasonally so check with them before making plans. Also Seneca Caverns has a great restaurant on the premises. Even if you don’t have time to take the tour, stop at Asbury’s Restaurant at Seneca Caverns. Undoubtedly, their Reuben sandwich is worth the detour!
Follow 5/5 a few miles to pick up Rt 33 West to travel back to Harman. Lastly, turn right onto Rt 32 North and follow to your cabin.
Our next Motorcycle Road Trips in West Virginia Adventure
That is it for this segment of Our Favorite Motorcycle Rides in West Virginia. Next time I plan to take you to the very top of West Virginia and to a zoo you’ve never heard of so watch for that post soon! If you’re interested in bringing your bike to West Virginia and want to stay in our cabins then drop me a line to goldenanchorcabins@gmail.com or call me at 304-704-8764. Our criteria for awesome motorcycle rides in West Virginia
I want to mention a few things about this blog series. First, these routes should not be used as an itinerary. Places I mention along the route are some of my favorite spots to visit but I doubt you could stop at all of them and complete the loop in a single day. Rather, read over my suggestions and find a few that fit your style before setting off. Or you can just run the route and enjoy the road!
Second, when I envision a perfect motorcycle ride through West Virginia, I expect a route that includes:
- SMOOTH ROADS. The road needs to be smooth, well kept pavement. Preferably two lanes (a little four lane highway is okay too).
- SCENIC ROADS. Moreover, the road has to wind through woods and along rivers.
- A LOOP, NOT A LINE. I’d rather have a full loop where I see different stuff than an over-and-back down the same road.
- PANORAMIC VIEWS. Somewhere on the route there needs to be a roadside parking spot with an overlook perfect for photo ops.
- DESTINATIONS. Besides pretty scenery, I want to see something unique to the state.
- GRUB. I want a few options for mom-n-pop restaurants that serve up great food.
I tried to keep all of these in mind while I wrote each of these motorcycle rides and roadtrip ideas.
If you’re looking for a cabin as part of your next motorcycle adventure, we would love to have you! Check our online calendar here for availability.
If you have any questions about vacationing with us, feel free to email me at goldenanchorcabins@gmail.com. You can also call me at 304-704-8764. I also send out a monthly newsletter where I keep all our guests up to date with what is going on at our cabins and the area. If you’d like to hear from us you can sign up for the newsletter here. Thanks so much for reading, we hope to host your next cabin getaway soon!
