Photographs from Spruce Knob overlook and Spruce Knob Lake, the highest point in West Virginia
We finally got around to climbing the big hill! Spruce Knob’s elevation is 4862′ making it the highest mountain in West Virginia. The summit of the mountain is around an hour from our cabins and it ABSOLUTELY worth the drive! Here are some photos from our day trip including several from the nearby Spruce Knob Lake.
Spruce Knob West Virginia walking trails
We chose to hike the easiest parts of the Spruce Knob area. There is a wonderful gravel path that circles the observation deck. There are several great stops so you can take in the views from all sides of the peak. I’m not sure how long this loop was but I’m going to guess it is less than a 1/2 mile in total.
Spruce Knob Lake WV walking trails
At Spruce Knob Lake we walked a slightly longer loop that wraps around the lake. This may have been a mile but not much more. The terrain is easy with much of it being on elevated decking walkways or limestone trails.

Directions:
- Begin driving 32 South to Harman
- Merge Left onto 33 East to Seneca Rocks
- Turn Right staying on 33 at Seneca Rocks
- Turn Right onto Briery Gap Rd
- Follow signs and continue to parking lot at top
