Our never ending search for all things fun in Tucker County led our family from The Golden Anchor Cabins north 15 miles to Blackwater Falls State Park yet again. This trip we checked out Blackwater Falls State Park’s sled run. This is wildly popular winter activity but it can be confusing for first timers. I hope this post sheds some light on what to do and where to go.

Finding the Blackwater Falls Sled Run
The first thing to keep in mind when you’re entering the park is the sled run itself isn’t clearly labeled. Instead, follow the signs to Lindy Point. This will take you across the Blackwater River and past the lodge. There is no need to stop at the lodge since you will either purchase your tickets ahead of time or directly from the staff at the sled run’s center. The sled run center also acts as a warming hut and snack bar.

Even though our passes maxed out the occupancy in our session, we did not feel cramped either going down the run or climbing the hill on their impressive 1/4 mile long magic carpet conveyor. Jamie found the ride up quite relaxing!
The sledding is fast and fun! Whether you’re a 10 year old or just an adult masquerading as a 10 year old, this is an absolute ball. Feel wind rush by as you zoom down the hill and the snow spray your face as you take turns and break at the bottom. Hear the sounds of screams and laughter from fellow sledders as they barrel down the hill with you. This is sure to become a perennial favorite for our family.

Sled Run Tips from a Local
- Book Ahead. Tickets should be purchased ahead of time but a limited amount may be available for walk-ins.
- Arrive Early. The roads can be snowy and icy. There is also a safety briefing before the start of the session.
- Dress for Cold. The sled run speeds down the hill, so make sure you are dressed for cold, windy winter temperatures.
- BONUS YUMMY TIP: There’s always a crackling fire by the ski center and the snack bar sells s’mores kits. They are complete with options like a Kit-Kat or Mounds bar instead of the standard Hershey’s chocolate (this blew my mind!).
