Do you want to see West Virginia mountains in a way few have? We have just the ticket for you. We now offer tickets to two of Durbin & Greenbrier Railroad’s lunch train rides! Just add either the New Tygart Flyer or the Cheat Mountain Salamander to your reservation and we’ll handle the rest!
Ride Option 1: New Tygart Flyer
This wilderness excursion features mountain grades, an “S” curve tunnel, a high bridge and miles of unspoiled mountain views. Vintage diesel-powered locomotives climb along the cascading Shavers Fork of the Cheat River to the High Falls of Cheat. Enjoy the view relaxing aboard our comfortable climate controlled passenger coaches.
This vintage diesel-powered passenger train has gained a reputation as one of the most relaxing mountain wilderness excursions in our Mountain Rail Adventure portfolio. The 4-hour, 46 mile round trip departs at 11 a.m. from the restored Elkins Depot on Railroad Avenue.
On the trip to the Falls, enjoy an “All You Can Eat” Cold Sandwich Buffet, which is included in the ticket price. The trip culminates at the High Falls of Cheat, an 18′ high, 150′ wide waterfall located in one of the most remote and pristine settings in the region. If you’re looking for comfort and spectacular views on a vintage train this is the ride for you!

Ride Option 2: Cheat Mountain Salamander
Named in honor of the little endangered creature whose sole habitat is the river of the same name, the CHEAT MOUNTAIN SALAMANDER takes you through some of the wildest mountain wilderness you will ever experience! Travel into the high country forests of legendary Cheat Mountain on this most stunning rail excursion, featuring great mountain vistas.
Explore some of the state’s most remote sections onboard this unique rail excursion. Choose between the full-day trip from Elkins or the shorter half-day trip from Cheat Bridge. Buffet lunch included for all passengers at no additional cost.
This trip also includes many interesting features such as a long tunnel built with an “S” curve far underneath Cheat Mountain, numerous long mountain vistas, and many opportunities to view exotic wildlife including bald eagle and black bear sightings. Stopovers include the inspirational “High Falls of the Cheat” and the former sight of the notorious town of Spruce, WV, once the highest and coldest incorporated town east of the Mississippi, accessible only by rail.
