When are they open?  Lunch and Dinner plus LATE on Fridays and Saturdays

Tucker County is home of the state’s treasure, Blackwater Falls, a majestic 62′ water fall that is one of the most photographed sites in West Virginia.  It is also home to Canaan Valley, the highest valley east of the Mississippi as well as our log cabin hot tub getaways!

Healthy Sandwiches, Local Beer and Live Music

Besides the natural wonders, Tucker County also has several proud locally owned restaurants including one in Thomas, the old coal town that has redefined itself as an artist’s haven, known far and wide as the Purple Fiddle.  The food is always fresh and so is their music!  Purple Fiddle is a casual, café-style, “order at the counter” restaurant and bar (serving micro-brewed beers and wine).  They host over 300 live music performances a year.  Their menu always includes a healthy selection of sandwiches and soups plus homemade salsa, hummus and ice cream.

Our Pick for a Valuable Purple Fiddle Review:

Hidden Treasure

“Driving through the area, we stopped in for lunch. I had the peace sandwich on gluten free bread and my daughter had the turkey wrap. They came served with chips and a pickle. We shared a peanut butter pie for dessert. All was delicious in a quaint atmosphere. Wish we had been there during the show. Looked like a great line up. Only flaw was lack of air conditioner and as it was rather warm out, it did cut our visit a bit short! Several art galleries and antique shops within walking distance of restaurant.”

Our Pick for a Valuable CJ’s Pizza Review:

A great steak sub!

We have been taken here for a meal when we come visit friends in Parsons. Every time, without fail the Steak Sub is chosen because it is just the best. Of course that is a “hubby” thing. I do the taco salad which is HUGE and full of meat and cheese. You have to dig for the greens, but can’t complain. The service is great too. A homey place in a homey town.

Our Pick for a Valuable Forks Inn Review:

Six stars if possible!

This is one of the best meals I’ve had anywhere. It is in a small inn on the outskirts of Elkins. We ate on their patio as the night descended and they turned on gas heaters to drive away the October chill. Both my friend and I had prime rib, which was delicious and served with great-tasting mashed potatoes and nicely prepared seasonal veggies. I had the Chinese black rice pudding with Bing cherries and ginger syrup and it was wonderful. Our server, Lisa, was attentive and friendly without being overly familiar. Not only would I come back to this restaurant in a heartbeat, I will stay at the inn as well. If you’re coming to or going through Elkins, do not miss this place!

If you are traveling into Randolph’s county seat of Elkins, WV to take in a live show at Gandy Dancer or to ride the rails on Durbin & Greenbrier’s New Tygart Flyer, you’ll want to know about the town’s #1 reviewed restaurant.  El Gran Sabor is a Casual Venezuelan restaurant with authentic Venezuelan fare & pan-Latin dishes served in a converted house in downtown Elkins with a bar & live music.

Latin Cuisine and Music

The restaurant is the culmination of a love story between Venezuelan chef, Derdlim Masten, and a WV local salsa band musician and teacher, Rob Masten.  Their combined love for Latin music, food and culture led them to open El Gran Sabor.  Their menu includes Venezuelan goodies like arepas, empenadas and pabellon plus Mexican favorites like burritos and enchiladas.  And don’t forget to save room for flan or sopopallia for dessert!

Our Pick for a Valuable Review:

Laughter and love!

My family had just gotten into town after a long drive for our overnight layover in Elkins. To find a good dining experience while traveling is tough. But from the moment I called to make reservations I had a feeling this wasn’t going to be good… it was going to be great! They set up a couple tables for my road worn clan and welcomed us with open arms and we gladly opened up our mouths and wallets. Everything was on point. All the food was flavorful, fresh and nicely presented. Plus our server was a delightfully helpful enthusiastic person that interacted so well with my boisterous but well mannered crowd. And the margaritas went down easy. The arepas were stellar as were the empanadas, cachapa, toston, yuca fries and flan.

Great restaurant and a great little town!

We don’t really have much of a reason to come to Elkins again… or… well, maybe now we do. Thanks for a job well done.

Plus their pit BBQ is smoking in the parking lot on Saturdays where they offer smoked pork, beef and turkey, St Louis style ribs, smoked beef brisket, 1/2 BBQ chicken and whole smoked trout!

Our Pick for a Valuable Review:

Best food found thus far!

Traveling on a windy road to who knows where….we happened upon the Fireside Cafe. Pulling in, we noticed plenty of cars in the parking lot – so we figured, “What the heck.” Walking in, the cafe is pleasant and non-assuming. The server greeted us, as we looked through the menu. We asked her suggestions and went on to order: the fried chicken with FRESH peaches and fried okra – my husband ordered the Fireside burger. All we can say is – this was the best food we has eaten thus far during our extended stay in Virginia & West Virginia. To top it off, we splurged (at the server’s suggestion) and ordered the home made cherry cobbler w/ice cream. It was fabulous. The whole meal was memorable – and we will be going back for the BBQ offered in the parking lot on Aug 10th. A pleasure tucked in the mountains of WV.

Gateway Family Restaurant

Combined Review Average: 4.6  (4.5 on TripAdvisor, 4.9 on Facebook, 4.4 on Google)

When are they open? Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner 7 days a week

If you’ve found yourself in Pendleton County, chances are you’re climbing up NRocks, exploring Seneca Cavern or winding your way to the top to West Virginia at Spruce Knob.  These adventure destinations give you an opportunity to eat at an outstanding country cooking style restaurant that also happens to be one of the highest rated restaurants in the county.  Gateway Family Restaurant is located right on Route 33 at the base of Spruce Knob.

Wanda Lambert and her staff are ready to serve you with the best burgers in the valley, along with home fries, daily specials and bread, rolls, cakes, pies and cobblers baked from scratch. Jamie and I can personally attest to the restaurant and kitchen’s cleanliness.  Counter service or tables, the Gateway is the right place to find a satisfying meal or a quick coffee and pie served with a smile.

Our Pick for a Valuable Review:

Home cooked breakfast satisfies the family

Well located at a cross-roads named Judy Gap, and 30 miles north of the Green Bank Radio Telescope this family restaurant was conveniently on our early morning path to the day’s activity at the Radio Telescope. (We were driving in from the North on US33, Seneca Rocks is about 10 miles north). The food and service were great. Prices were reasonable. At 9 am the clientele was split about equally between tourists and local patrons.

The highlight of our breakfast party was the three-egg garbage omelet. I enjoyed the buckwheat pancakes.

Be advised that this is a remote location and cell phone service was spotty (my carrier is AT&T, my phone had 1 bar of signal intermittently before arriving at the restaurant). If you are planning your visit be prepared to have a paper map handy, as all things cell phone and wi-fi related stop working between this restaurant and the Green Bank Radio telescope.

And they offer several specialty quesadillas including the Sicilian with spinach, tomato, feta, pesto and Monterey jack cheese or the Hawaiian BBQ with BBQ chicken, pineapple and Monterey jack.

Our Pick for a Valuable Review:

Reserve your table in advance

Excellent food- one of my two favorite places in the area. I enjoyed my chicken and bacon quesadilla, and the lava cake was fantastic!  We ate at the bar even with an early arrival for dinner. The servers advised us to call for reservations in advance, as early as possible, if we ever wanted a table. This place is popular!  Still, the server at the bar was attentive and the good came quickly- who really needs a table?

When are they open?  Lunch and Dinner   Closed Sunday

O’Neills is a casual dining restaurant located in Moorefield, West Virginia, right off of West Virginia’s scenic Highway 48.  If you’re traveling from Virginia or Maryland and want to stop for an awesome lunch or dinner, O’Neills is the number one restaurant in Hardy County.  The restaurant is small and the food is amazing so it is always a good idea to call ahead, especially if you’d like to sit on their outside patio.

For lunch you can choose from a wide selection of salads and sandwiches or try one of their “roll ups” like the Moorefield Roll, a marinated chicken breast with lettuce, tomato, bacon and jalapeño jack cheese in a tomato basil tortilla with a side of honey mustard and served with your choice of French fries, homemade potato chips or homemade coleslaw.  For dinner, try something from their Main Course like filet mignon, grilled salmon, mesquite grilled pork chops and shrimp and chicken pesto pasta to name a few.

Our Pick for a Valuable Review:

Delicious food and friendly service

Save room for dessert because they have a wide variety of delicious pies and cakes. They take reservations for parties of 5 or more. We had the mahi mahi and the fried oysters- both were delicious. Also the spinach artichoke dip was the best appetizer I have had in years. Enjoy!

Our Pick for a Valuable Review:

Best restaurant in the entire county.

Main Street Grill is the very best restaurant in the county, and they work hard to be so, with Main Street Diner being second, as they are owned and operated by the same people. This is definitely going to be the best place to eat if you find yourself in Romney or anywhere close. All of the food is fresh and high quality. Considering it’s a small town, their meat is even attained locally, which is the best. Awesome food, awesome service, awesome quality.

Mineral County

Best Restaurant in Keyser, West Virginia

When are they open?  Lunch and Dinner   Closed Mondays

Situated at the busy intersection of Mineral and Chestnut Streets, Castiglia’s offers an impressive variety of choices, all made from scratch with fresh ingredients. Specialty items like high-quality cheeses and meats arrive weekly by the truckload from a supplier in New Jersey. Portions are generous, so come hungry. Hand-tossed pizzas, Italian rolls and baked specialties like Stromboli and calzone feature freshly made dough. Chef Gerardo Castiglia’s homemade tomato sauce appears in a bevy of pasta dishes, including five varieties of spaghetti. Subs range from hot to cold, and hamburgers are made with Angus beef. Popular appetizers and side orders, several salad selections and a Zuppa del giorona (soup of the day) round out the menu. For those with a sweet tooth, Castiglia’s offers Italian favorites — tera me su, cannoli and amaretto cheesecake. This is not low-cal eating, but who cares, with food this tasty?

Our Pick for a Valuable Review:

Extra-Large Portions for Take-Home Eating Too

Italian & American Foods – My husband ordered the Spaghetti Dinner and was served a giant salad w/ dressing (everything fresh & crisp), the platter of Spaghetti, and a nice portion of Garlic Bread. When his plate came, he looked at the waitress with his jaws dropping almost to the floor and asked how many other people were going to be eating it (there had to be enough for 4 people on that plate!). It was fantastic – I tried a small bite, myself. I ordered the Manicotti – it was a huge oblong dish filled with 3 large Manicotti pasta and 3 different Cheeses and the fresh made Tomato Sauce. For both dishes, they hand-grated fresh Parmesan onto the dish until you said stop. This was a very tasty dish, I just wish there had been a ratio of more pasta to the cheeses & sauce. But it was a fantastic meal at fantastically low prices. As usual, we had to get boxes to take the left-overs with us & 2 more people ate & got completely full on it. The restaurant atmosphere is one of joy and laughter and the staff very friendly with quick service. This place stays packed nightly and the customers were a mix of families, couples, friends, and workers. If you are ever in Keyser, WV – this is a must!

Best Restaurants near Cass Railroad

The Last Run

Combined Review Average: 4.3  (4.0 on TripAdvisor, 4.6 on Facebook, 4.3 on Google)

When are they open?  Lunch & Dinner 7 days a week

The Golden Anchor Cabins is a great home base for WV site seeing.  Even Pocahontas County, the most remote part of the Potomac Highlands is a beautiful road trip option from our cabins.  The famous Greenbank Observatory is an hour drive from our cabins and Cass Railroad is only another 10 to 15 minutes further down the road.  And while you’re guaranteed not to have cell phone service, you won’t go hungry if you stop at Pocahontas County’s favorite restaurant, The Last Run.

At The Last Run Restaurant, the food is good and the unique setting is outstanding. Meals are cooked from scratch – no instant potatoes here – and the ice cream is hand dipped. The Last Run Restaurant is located in Cass adjacent to the Cass Country Store. They serve your favorite fast food including burgers, hot dogs, and old-fashioned BBQ plus reasonably priced daily specials like their honey ham and Swiss on flatbread with macaroni salad and a drink for under $9. After a fun train ride or an afternoon of science exploration at the observatory, be sure to stop by The Last Run to enjoy an ice cream cone at their old timey soda fountain.

Our Pick for a Valuable Review:

Great food and prices along with wonderful people!

A cute little restaurant with the Company Store within the building along with a killer soda fountain (ice cream!). We has the “Belly Buster” cod and it was delicious. The carrot cake for dessert was killer! The day before, riding the train we availed ourselves to the ice cream at the fountain. There is an interesting antique pharmacy display in the Company Store. Within walking distance (which comes in handy after dinner and/or ice cream) there is the Cass Museum along with the Theater which has a detailed and splendid film encompassing the history of the railroad and lumber company up to the present incorporation as a state park.

The Ice Cream Shop

Combined Review Average: 4.93  (5.0 on TripAdvisor, 5.0 on Facebook, 4.8 on Google)

When are they open?  1:00 to 9:00  Memorial Day into Fall Season

I just couldn’t end this post and not mention the best reviewed restaurant in the entire Potomac Highland region, the Ice Cream Shop in Davis, West Virginia!  For those of you that are friends of our Facebook page, you’ll know that we are huge fans of the Ice Cream Shop in Davis.  Every spring, when owner Bremmen Mathena opens the doors to his downtown country ice cream parlor, the street gets a little sweeter and the smiles come out like spring flowers.

Their menu includes specialty sundaes (like the S’mores, a sundae with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, marshmallow and graham cracker crumbs), floats, shakes and parfaits (like the German Chocolate Cake with chocolate cake, chocolate ice cream, caramel sauce and coconut).  Plus, this season they’re featuring employee specials.  The most recent addition is Sarah’s Fruity Pebbles milkshake.

The Ice Cream Shop’s atmosphere is fun and inviting, the owners and staff are always friendly and the treats are out-of-this-world!  This is a must-stop if you’re in the Potomac Highlands through the summer months.

Our Pick for a Valuable Review:

We skipped our restaurant’s dessert and drove an hour to come here

It’s that good. The ice cream is incredibly creamy, but isn’t quite a custard. Lots of varieties are offered here — you can create a sundae, choose a sundae that’s already on the menu, get a milkshake, or get a classic cone. Worth trying: the s’mores sundae and the raspberry-swirled soft serve. Not only is this the best ice cream I’ve had in West Virginia, it ranks among the best ice cream I’ve had in the world.
