Coffee Shops near Blackwater Falls
Any time Jamie and I vacation, the first thing we have to find is a good coffee shop so we can start our day with a cup of cold brew. I think it is only fitting to start our list with our two favorite local coffee shops.
TipTop Coffee Shop
TipTop Coffee is located on East Street in downtown Thomas. They are purveyors of equitably sourced & masterfully roasted coffee, pour-overs & espresso, fine wines, fresh baked pastries, single origin teas, and bean-to-bar . Their menu changes weekly and by season. Expect origin offerings from the regions of Latin American, East Africa and the Pacific Rim to rotate and blow your flavor palate with international notes that beckon you to discern what exactly is brewing in your cup!
Trailhead Coffee Shop
Start your day at the Trailhead on Williams Avenue in Davis, WV! Trailhead Coffee offers locally roasted organic fair trade coffee from Stone Tower Joe and tea from Rishi. Besides the morning juice, they offer a variety of goodies from pastries to bagels to quiche to get your day started. They are open daily from 8:00 am to 3 pm. Breakfast Restaurants near Blackwater Falls
With the proper coffee in hand, now we can find a good breakfast place. While there are several places that serve breakfast near our cabins, we have two consistent places breakfast near Blackwater Falls.
Milo’s Café
The restaurant at Bright Morning Inn is our first choice for breakfast in Davis, WV. Their delicious menu includes huevos rancheros, avocado toast, pancakes and other breakfast staples. They also have a variety of breakfast sandwiches including my favorite – John’s Hangover. This is an English muffin with eggs, sausage, onions, green peppers and pepper-jack cheese. YUM!
Canaan Valley Resort’s Hickory Room
There’s another restaurant even closer to Golden Anchor Cabins. Located in Canaan Valley State Park, The Hickory Room is Canaan Valley Resort’s primary restaurant. Have a traditional country breakfast prepared as you sit by their wall of picture windows and gaze across all of Canaan Valley. We especially enjoy their breakfast buffets on the weekends. The Hickory Room is open seven days a week. They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner making it a great option for any meal, any time of day!
Lunch Restaurants near Blackwater Falls
After a morning of hiking the state park or biking along the Allegheny Highlands Trail, it is important to find a great lunch spot. Most of the restaurants near Blackwater Falls are open for lunch but there are a few standouts.
Farm Up Table
The Farm Up Table is my top pick for lunch near Blackwater Falls! Farm Up takes diners on a culinary tour of the South with their casual elegance in the restaurant and their elevated cuisine.
Their lunch menu features items from their locally famous food truck like their pickled pig Cuban, crunchy clucker, Big Easy shrimp po’boy and truffle fries. They also have weekly specials, bakery items and desserts featuring local ingredients.
The owners strive to make Farm Up Table the most sought-after restaurant experience in the area. They are also a great option for dinner, though you’ll need to make reservations. This place is packed in the evenings.
Big Belly Deli
Just a few miles from Blackwater Falls, Big Belly Deli is in downtown Davis. They still operate with the same values they started with in 2013. Food should be not only quick, but fun, filling, and inexpensive. Besides their classic deli sandwich offerings, they have several cool fan fave’s on their menu like the Messy Becky, a roast beef topped with horseradish cheese, sautéed mushrooms & onions served on a toasted bun! They are typically open every afternoon except Mondays. Watch their facebook page for their most current hours.
Dinner Restaurants near Blackwater Falls
If you’re staying at our cabins, chances are you’re going to be looking for a nice sit down restaurant where you can enjoy a great meal. If you want a romantic dinner near Blackwater Falls and aren’t afraid to drive thirty minutes or so, I have the perfect places in mind!
Alpine Lodge
Alpine Lodge is my number one choice for a wonderfully prepared dinner! They are located in Alpena, and NOT to be confused with the Saw Mill at Alpine Lodge in Davis. They are open on Thurs, Fri and Sat nights only and require a reservation. Chef John Curry sources local ingredients from area farmers markets. Fresh caught fish, steaks and pastas are all on the menu. I personally watch their Facebook page to see if their Rack of lamb with rosemary demi-glace is on his feature list because they are absolutely heaven!
The Forks
You can experience dining in a whole new way. Allow the Forks to tell you a story through their piquant and pleasantly exquisite six course dining journey. The tasting menu is thoughtfully designed and perfectly tailored by the Forks’ classically trained chef, Eric Stalnaker. Their current menu features six courses: an hors d’oeuvre, soup, salad, sorbet, main course, and dessert served to you with the utmost care and craftsmanship. Every ingredient, texture, and flavor are specifically prepared to perfectly complement each component of the dish and to regale the palate. Reservations required.
Canaan Valley BBQ
If you don’t want to travel too far from the cabins or if you’re looking for a fast casual restaurant instead, Canaan Valley BBQ is another good option to consider. Canaan Valley BBQ serves high-quality smoked meats and fresh, made-from-scratch sides. Their focus is on the simple goodness of these whole foods, minimally processed, cooked low and slow so you can enjoy the flavor of traditional barbecue. They are open every day for lunch and dinner except Monday.
Best Dessert Shops near Blackwater Falls
You can’t forget about dessert when you’re on vacation! Luckily the Blackwater Falls area has a few sweet shops that will hit the spot.
Ice Cream Shop
The Ice Cream Shop in Davis, WV is the county’s sweetest summer spot. They are open from mid-April through late September. The Ice Cream Shop offers both soft serve and hand-dipped ice cream treats and even sorbets from their in-house creamery.
Macy Lou’s Gourmet Apples
Macy Lou’s Gourmet Apples is one of my favorite stores with a great story! Shortly after graduation, Macy Nestor took her side business of making candy-coated apples into a full time career. Her storefront is located on East Avenue in Thomas, WV. She covers Granny Smith apples in caramel, then dips them in chocolate and rolls them in choice toppings. She is only open Friday through Sunday while her inventory lasts so stop by here early for a special treat!
Spirits near Blackwater Falls
There are some great microbreweries and distilleries near Blackwater Falls. Here are the ones you simply can’t skip out on if you’re in need of a West Virginia brew.
Stumptown Ales
Stumptown pays homage to hops, brews with passion and precision and embraces Davis’s storied history. Their ales are highly-spirited, super-powered and hop-centric. Here is a taste of what could be on tap any given weekend. Check their current list on facebook or just stop by and see what they are pouring!
- SIX LEGGED FROG – IPA6.8% ABV – This murky looking IPA is for those who are willing to drink outside the box. We all know that a frog with six legs is more “hoppy” than a regular frog. This holds true for this ale. Brewed with abundant Galaxy hops from Australia, this is a must-try for any true hop head. Fruity hop flavors with very little bitterness. She may not be beautiful, but she will blow your mind!
- LEFTY LUCY AMERICAN ALE5.9% ABV – If you are looking for just another boring amber, this is not it. In Stumptown fashion, we have balanced a dark amber ale with abundant hops to make this a unique, hoppy amber.
Still Hollow Spirits
Still Hollow Spirits is a family owned, farm to bottle liquor distillery located high in WV’s Allegheny Mountains. They have traditional mountain style whiskeys and unique botanical infusions made with local grains and mountain spring water. Their unique & sustainable spirits support the local agricultural economy. Remember to save some time in your itinerary for a tasting!
Swilled Dog Cider
So far, our list has included establishments within a 20 minute drive of our cabins. Swilled Dog Cider is so wonderful and unique that I made an exception for it and included it on this list. This cidery makes for a tasty evening destination, especially if you’re planning an excursion to the Spruce Knob or Seneca Caverns area! We did a full write up on Swilled Dog Cider here.
